The ancients considered sexuality perfectly natural and felt no need to defend it.  But later western writers were obsessed with sexuality which they felt the need to defend to a culture steeped in Christian opposition to sexual pleasure.  From Lorenzo de Medici to William Blake, poets celebrated the fleeting pleasures of the flesh.
